Contracts to buy previously owned US homes increased by 1.4 percent in January of 2016 over the same month in the previous year, the smallest gain since September of 2014. Compared to the previous month, pending home sales index declined sharply by 2.5 percent after rising an upwardly revised 0.9 percent in December while missing market expectations of a 0.5 percent growth. The recent acceleration in home prices along with a minimal inventory throughout the country was the main obstacle holding back would-be buyers. Pending home sales tumbled 3.2 percent in the Northeast, 4.9 percent in the Midwest, but rose 0.3 percent in the South. Pending Home Sales in the United States averaged 1.21 percent from 2002 until 2016, reaching an all time high of 30 percent in October of 2009 and a record low of -24.50 percent in April of 2011.
